My Christmas Shopping Is Done...avoid Holiday Stress By Stealing My Tips

Yes, once again I've crossed off every last person on my Christmas shopping list before Halloween. Mom, Dad, Grandma, brother Steve, brother Jason, kids, nieces, nephews, even bus drivers, schoolteachers and the mailman. I've stockpiled hostess gifts, stocking suffers and a few random presents for those surprise exchanges that pop up every holiday. Everything's already wrapped and tagged. Come December, I'll be relaxing in a hot bath with a good book while the rest of the world scrambles to amass ratchet sets, bezel set diamond studs and the latest Tickle Me Elmo.

Why not join me? Besides the smug satisfaction you'll enjoy from getting your holiday shopping out of the way early, you'll get to actually appreciate the parties, the cookie baking, the egg nog, the mistletoe-even the relatives-without guilt.

So how'd I do it already? With a little advanced planning. You can get your Christmas shopping done early too, if you follow my lead. Here are my secrets:

Nine Christmas shopping tips (Hanukkah shopping tips too) to make the holidays easier:

Make a list. A little advanced planning goes a long way. Just like you do when you go to the grocery store, make a list. This way you'll stay focused and finish the task fast. Before you shop, write down who you need to buy for, what you plan to spend and any ideas you have in mind based on individual tastes, hobbies, etc. Think: Did they mention a great book they want to read? A piece of jewelry they particularly admire? A movie they want to see? An item of clothing they like? A tool they had to have? A play that looked interesting? If you're stumped, look for gift finders online. Many popular web sites have special holiday gift collections broken down by gender, age, tastes, price, etc. If you want to give something truly memorable, think back to the truly memorable gifts you've received. My favorites have been a basket full of little things I love, like books, lotions, bath stuff, etc.; a subscription to the New York Times daily crossword puzzle online; a three-course dinner prepared with all my favorite foods, and a gorgeous black baroque pearl bracelet. Think back to gifts you've given that have been a hit. What were they? Who enjoyed them?

Shop online. This is the best tip of all. Once I got a computer, holiday shopping was no longer a chore I dreaded. It actually became a breeze. Doing your Christmas shopping online saves time, money (with gas prices being what they are) and legwork. Best of all you don't even have to get out of your pajamas. I can breeze through my entire list in under an hour, I have most everything within a week, and it's delivered right to my door. And don't worry about security: Shopping online is safer than shopping in stores. Far more credit card numbers are stolen in your presence by waiters, clerks, etc. than are stolen by hackers and phishers.

Narrow your list of sites. Over the years I've narrowed down my holiday shopping web sites to a few great e-tailers I use over and over. Some let me save my information in a password protected format so I just log in and shop. Once my shopping cart is full, I don't have to retype my name and address, or the addresses I ship to. One caveat: Don't store credit card data. Even though it's probably not going to happen, hackers can and do steal your information. Best to retype your credit card number each time to be on the safe side.

The best news about site loyalty is that many sites offer incentives to repeat buyers. One 20% coupon can go a long way toward shaving your holiday gift budget!

Use e-tailers that have something for most everyone. I have one online jewelry site I shop at over and over because they have something for most everyone on my list. Last year I shopped for all the women on my Christmas shopping list in one 20-minute sitting. I got a trendy gemstone ring for my niece; a classic pearl necklace for my goddaughter, an inexpensive but high-quality pearl bracelet for my sons' teachers, a pearl pendant for my friend and a pearl jewelry set for my mother. Shopping in one place made it easy to manage my task. I printed my receipt at the end and had a great reference for what I bought and what I still needed to buy.

Search for sites that offer free shipping. Pretty self-explanatory. Shipping can add a lot of hidden and surprising costs to your holiday budget. There are plenty of sties that offer free shipping regularly, and still more that use free shipping to entice holiday shoppers. Search for free shipping coupons on Google or at great coupon sites like couponcabin.com. Sometimes you'll find a money-saving code that wasn't obvious on the site.

Search for sites that offer free gifts. This is my favorite tip. Free gifts with certain dollar amounts purchased can save you big bucks. For example, the site I work for offers free pearl stud earrings with purchases over $150. Buy a few presents and you've earned a high quality, free gift to give to someone else on your list or save for yourself.

Always check return policies. Generous return policies are a must for early holiday shoppers. This tip is especially important if you're buying a gift in October that your recipient might want to return or exchange in January. You don't want them to get burned if they only have 30 days to return an item. Look for 90 day return policies at least, and make a note of sites that don't appear to have helpful customer service or easily accessible contact information. You don't want to spend your money at sites that make it difficult for you to contact them after the sale.

Click the gift wrapping option. E-tailers that don't gift-wrap get crossed off my list. Why? Gift-wrapping is time-consuming and expensive. Christmas wrapping paper is about three bucks or more a roll; bows can be a dollar each, and you've got tags and tape, not to mention the time involved to crease perfectly wrinkle-free corners or get the wrapping on that oblong-shaped doll just right. Plus, like me, your might not be very good at it. At $3-$5 per gift, which is what the sites I shop at typically charge, it pays to have items gift-wrapped. Shopping online saves you money on gas, why not put that toward wrapping? Just make sure to have gifts tagged if you've ordered multiple gifts for multiple people or you'll have a lot of unwrapping and rewrapping to do.

For last minute stuff, such as miscellaneous stocking stuffers and office grab bag gifts, I grab items at places where I already shop regularly, like the grocery store. Poke around and you can find great books, gift cards, beer, candy, mugs, even office supplies, art supplies, puzzles and flowers. Another great idea is a magazine subscription. (With a monthly subscription, your gift will keep on giving 12 times a year.) Hey, you have to grocery shop regularly anyway. Why not grab what you need there rather than make a special trip? Then you can do like I do and not make one extra trip or spend more than an hour on your holiday shopping, including the gift wrapping.

Ready to take back the holidays from the retailers and celebrate what these special days are really about? I find it far more satisfying to celebrate my spirituality and spend time with family and friends rather than waste my valuable time at some overcrowded mall with crabby, stressed out shoppers. Why not join me this holiday?

Valentines Day Fundraisers

Valentines Day is a great time for fundraising, particularly for school groups and small nonprofits. Here are some quick ways to raise funds with Valentines Day fundraisers.

Roses Are Green
One of the easiest ways to raise funds on Valentines Day is to sell roses. You can offer single roses, a full dozen, various flower bouquets, or delicious chocolate roses.

Each one can usually be sold at 100% markup for a 50% gross profit margin. You can source discount roses from supermarkets with flower departments, wholesale florists, or websites that specialize in bulk shipments from rose-growing areas on the West Coast.

Obviously, men will make up the bulk of your target market for flower buyers, so you should gear your marketing to them. You'll need to pre-sell your roses or stake out some high-traffic areas to reach a lot of last-minute guys.

Chocolate roses are a great seller in schools and workplaces. They are a great gift that fits a good niche on Valentines Day. They are unique and generate a lot of interest. They are also a safe gift to give for non-romantic purposes, and they never go to waste.

Take advance orders whenever possible and have a central pickup point. You can also increase your results by providing extra services on Valentines Day such as gift delivery, singing telegrams, offering last-minute roses in high-traffic locations, etc.

Create Gift Baskets
It's easy to create gift baskets for your group to pre-sell for Valentines Day. Simply go to a craft store such as Michaels and purchase the quantity of baskets you'll need. Then do several shopping runs to major wholesale clubs like BJ's, Sam's Club, and Costco for your gift basket contents.

Create some baskets with a selection of wine, cheese, chocolates, coffee, candy, gourmet biscuits, etc. Give them each a theme and establish a variety of price ranges.

Once you have your samples ready, you can start pre-selling. Use a simple order taker form and collect payment upfront. Then, create the rest of the baskets needed to fulfill your advance orders.

Use a central pickup point or offer local delivery or UPS shipping for an extra charge.

Auction Valentines Day Gifts
Another great Valentines Day fundraiser is to conduct auctions of gifts appropriate for the holiday. Your choices include running an event-based auction, conducting a silent auction, hosting an online auction on your website, or listing your gifts on eBay. You can even do combinations of these four auction styles.

Some simple items to auction are the gift baskets mentioned above. You can also offer restaurant gift certificates, specialty items, business services, or donated items.

High-ticket items that you can offer might include spa visits, limo rides, romantic weekend getaways, and a night on the town at a gourmet restaurant.

Don't forget to offer gifts for men such as sports memorabilia, event tickets, bottles of wine, etc.

Raffle Themed Prizes
Another way to raise funds is to sell raffle tickets. You can offer a selection of prizes such as those Valentines Day gifts previously mentioned. Or, you can even include some with a different theme or timing such as ski vacations or a condo stay with a week at the beach.

Raffles offer an easier way to reach a larger potential audience than you might draw for an event or for various types of auctions.

A raffle allows you to put a larger sales force to work than you can with other methods, but be sure to check your local regulations regarding selling raffle tickets.

Final Note
A key point with any fundraiser is to attract plenty of advance publicity. For more information about publicizing your fundraiser event go to www.fundraiserhelp.com and look at publicity.

Good luck with your Valentines Day fundraisers!

Are You Wondering About Bridesmaid Gifts?

Any wedding day will be full of memories, especially for thebride and groom. They, of course, are the key players, whetherit is a formal or informal wedding. With a formal wedding, themonths of planning may build up a high level of anticipation innot just the bride and groom, but also others who will also playkey roles on the big day. To bridesmaids in particular, the leadup to the wedding day may be an exciting time. The bride andgroom will undoubtedly want to commemorate the day for them withbridesmaid's gifts.

For sure, bridesmaids will appreciate at least a token gift tohelp them remember the day. As with any gift, what you choose asa bridesmaid gift will depend on budget and age. If anything,"older" bridesmaids are easier to choose for, as personalizedsilver or crystal, for example, and other more adult products, are more likely to be appreciated.

Younger bridesmaids, though, may turn out to be easier than youthought, whatever your budget. It is a matter of thinking abouttheir tastes and interests and finding something appropriate. While it is traditional to give all bridesmaids the same gift, that does not necessarily have to be the case. After all, theyhave probably been forced into a uniform dress for the occasion, and if you have several, or many, bridesmaids then no doubt oneor more were not too happy with the colour or design, even ifthey are too polite to tell the bride.

Choosing the bridesmaid's gift may be a good time to redress thebalance, and do something individual, a unique bridesmaid giftfor each bridesmaid; unless, that is, you know the bridesmaidswell enough to know that all will be happy with the same thing. At least by having the same gift, there is no danger of onebridesmaid being jealous of the other.

How, then, can you make each bridesmaid gift unique, withouthaving to go out seeking an appropriate gift, the like of whichyou and your bridesmaids have never seen before? There are acouple of ways to add an individual and personal touch: Engravable Gifts

Many items, including popular bridesmaid gift items such asjewellery, candles and candle holders, goblets, can either beengraved, embossed or have a medallion attached that can beengraved. Engraving gives you the opportunity to add anindividual touch for each bridesmaid, thus acknowledging thateach has played their own important part.

Bridesmaids of any age will appreciate something engraved withtheir name and those of the bride and groom, plus of course yourpersonal message. If you have a wide variety of ages amongstyour bridesmaids, then why not give each a different gift, appropriate for their age, but also engraved with their personalmessage.

If you have chosen jewellery, then you have a gift theme thatcan be applied to all ages, and be engraved at the same. Evenyoung girls usually like jewellery, so you could be making yourbridesmaids very happy, commemorating the occasion nicely, andmaking each gift choice unique.

Gift Baskets

Like jewellery, gift baskets can be made suitable for all agesof bridesmaid. If you choose an attractive and unusual basket, then even if the contents are consumable (such as chocolates)the girl will have the basket left as a memento of the weddingand her role as a bridesmaid.

With gift baskets, you can choose appropriate contents for eachof your bridesmaids, whether they are 2 years old or 18; and youcan even include an engraved gift inside to personalize it forher even more. So, baskets do really give a lot of scope forindividuality and addressing the age problem. There are a goodselection of customized gift baskets online for you to choosefrom.

Planning the wedding will be a big task that will preoccupy youif you are a bride or groom. But don't forget to give a bit ofthought to those bridesmaids for their part in your big day. They are sure to appreciate it.

Tips To Buying Gifts Online

If you are browsing for gifts, then you have undoubtedly been doing some virtual window shopping. For many, the concept of ordering gifts online is new. Even though mail-order and catalog vendors have been in existence for years, there is something about shopping online that still worries some shoppers. So, whether you are new to buying gifts online or you are the kind of shopper who already knows their way around a virtual shopping mall, the following tips may help to make your buying experience a pleasant one.

When shopping for gifts online, always make sure that you know the company you are buying from. Never go around passing out your credit card number as though it were sticks of bubble gum. Instead, purchase only from a reputable company or one that you have researched with the Better Business Bureau. Most major catalog vendors also have websites, which ensures a safe shopping experience from nationally known vendors.

If you receive an e-mail inviting you to purchase from a store that you are not familiar with, do not click on any link inside the e-mail. Many links are nothing more than a scam that is set up to access your credit card information. If you want to shop from a particular website, open your browser and manually enter the website address rather than clicking on an e-mail link.

If you are looking for a real bargain, consider thinking like a bargain hunter. The best deals are often found at auctions, which is ideal as the buyer gets to determine their purchase price. One of the largest jewelry auction websites is Bidz.com, which offers everything from gold watches to rings and diamond necklaces. Depending on the time of day you bid, bargains are often found very early in the morning while the rest of the world is still having their first cup of coffee.

If at all possible, use a credit card to purchase gifts online. If anything should go wrong with the order and the seller will not stand behind the product, you may have the ability to file a dispute with your credit card in order to get your money back for the defective item. It will also help if you can check with the company's return policy prior to placing an order. Some items, such as opened computer software or DVD movies, are not returnable. Other items, such as lingerie or similar items are also non-refundable if they have been worn. The return policy is very important with any purchase, especially where gifts are concerned incase they need to be exchanged later.

Shopping for gifts online is not so different from browsing through the mall. You will want to give careful consideration to the recipient's favorite items or wish list before committing to a purchase. Does he have a favorite watch brand or sports team? Does she have a favorite gemstone or apparel color? These are all things to consider when buying gifts anywhere, whether online or in person. As a final thought to shopping for gifts, always try to stay within a reasonable budget and select something nice at a cost that you can comfortably afford.

A European Christmas

With the holidays right around the corner, it's hard not toreminisce our childhood memories and holidays of yesteryear. Ineach culture, there are differing values and traditions whichare celebrated in different ways.

During the 70's, growing up 'German' in Europe was one of themost fascinating and magical decades. Having strong Germanroots, our family participated in many German Christmastraditions. One of those traditions was Advent. The Advent, orChristmas calendar, is picture-box calendar decorated withwintry & Christmas scenes, biblical characters and 'St.Nicolas.' On the face of the calendar, are 24 small doors, eachcontaining a small chocolate - one opened each day for theholiday season. The December 24th door, which is the'Heiligabend' (Christmas Eve) is usually the largest door on thecalendar and most often contains a chocolate Nativity. Aschildren, we relished in this fun, and tasty feature of theholiday season.

But Advent wasn't simply comprised of the Holiday Calendar, wealso partook in the Advent Wreath, or 'Adventskranz' which wasbeautifully displayed on tables throughout the house. Wreathesheld 4 candles; the first candle being lit the fourth Sundaybefore Christmas, and another one each Sunday thereafter. Aroundthe evergreen wreath of candles, our family would gather as eachcandle was meticulously lit. My mom would recite a simple,German passage each time she would light a candle:

"Advent, Advent Ein Kerzlein brent. Erst Eins, den Zwei, denDrei, den Vier - den steht der Christkind vor der tur."

Which translates into, 'Advent, Advent, a candle burns. Firstone, then two, then three, then four - then stands the ChristChild before the door.'

For you see, in Germany, it is the 'Christkind' (Christ Child)who brings gifts on Christmas Eve.

Another childhood pastime was St. Nikolaustag Nikolaustag (St.Nicholas Day) was a fun and lighthearted tradition wherebychildren everywhere anxiously awaited the arrival of December6th when the Nikolaus, or Weinachtsmann (Santa Claus) came.Leading up to Nikolaustag, we children would have to behave verywell, because St. Nikolaus could 'see everything' we did. Andthe night before December 6th, we would have to clean our winterboots meticulously to put outside our doors. Why the heck wouldwe clean our boots and place them outside our doors? Well, I'lltell you why - if we were good, and our boots were really clean,St. Nikolaus would stuff our boots with candies, little toys andchocolates. If we were bad, we would receive a bundle ofswitches or lumps of coal.

Unknown to popular American custom, the 'Weinachtsmann' wasconceived by German-American Illustrator, Thomas Nast, whocreated the Christmas image of Santa in America - which, ultimately set a precedent for the permanent, symbolicestablishment of Santa Claus.

Traditionally, German Christmas is observed through 'HeiligeDrei Konige Tag,' or Three Kings Day (also known as the Magi orthe Wise Men). In some parts of Europe, such as Austria, Germanyand Switzerland, the Letters C + M + B (Caspar, Melchor, andBalthazar - and, 'Christus mansionem benedicat,' meaning 'Christbless this house.') are etched with chalk above doorways andhome entrances on January 6th. Of course, this is the epitome ofthe 12 Days of Christmas

Finally, on the 'Cristkind Abend (Christ Child Eve or ChristmasEve), aside from the Weinachts Baum (Christmas Tree customstarted by Martin Luther), families receive 'Bunte Teller,' orcolored plates filled with oranges, candies, Marzipan (comprisedof almonds and suger), Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Stollen (fruitbread) and an assortment of chocolates and other goods. Beforeany gifts are exchanged, Christmas Carols like Stille Nacht(Silent Night from Austrian composer Franz Gruber) are sung bythe tree.

To this day, I am still amazed at the profound effects ofChristmas' past have had on me. As a child, the holiday wasmystical and magical, as an adult, its beautiful memories areforever etched in my heart and soul.

Wishing all a happy, memory-filled, holiday season, I amsincerely,

Plan Ahead For Joy This Christmas

It's been a long year - I've moved from Scotland's capital downto England's capital. I'm now living in London's busyChelsea region. I also had my second child this year: my sonBrad is now 9 weeks old. It can be hard sometimes, managing twoyoung babies by myself during the day. Majela is now 18 monthsand is a handful in her own right, but trying to keep her undercontrol and look after Brad is very difficult at times. There are three joys that I need to help me enjoy arelaxing day in the face of the madness which is Christmas;caffeine, quiet children and a mobile with a good battery. Now that Christmas is getting so near I need to getout doing some shopping! I have managed to convince mysister-in-law to watch Brad for a couple of hours and this willlet me out to the shops. On the way back from the shops, my planis to pop in to Starbucks and try one of their new Christmascoffees. I've already had a peak at their new line of coffeesonline at Starbucks Christmas drinks. The gingerbreadlatte sounds good, but I'm looking forward more to trying theirnew toffee nut latte. I can enjoy my coffee, and myday, if I can keep Majela quiet for a while. I can bribe herwith a little toy from the Early Learning Centre, and she'll behappily tired out after having fun in the shop. I'mgoing to get Majela something small on the day, which I cancarry around, and then I can give it to her in the Starbucks tokeep her calm while I have my coffee. The big present that I'mgoing to get her for Christmas I'll get on their website ( ELC ) and they cancarry it home for me. While I'm out I know I don'thave to worry about Brad because my sister-in-law can phone meat any time. My last phone's battery didn't even last half a dayand I'd always be worrying about leaving the kids at home. I'mnot really a geek, but I got my new Sony phone ( Sony Ericcson ) becausethe battery's so strong. This is also handy when I have to goout at night. Planning ahead to put some little joysinto your day isn't selfish - it's just the best way to enjoyyour Christmas in peace.

Christmas is a time for memories. What better way to createlasting ones than to gather the whole family around to watchsome great classic Christmas movies?

Many movies come to mind, but following are the three consideredby many to be the best.

George Bailey(JimmyStewart) is considering ending it all to escape all the problemsin his life--on Christmas! Just as he is about to jump off abridge, he's interrupted by Clarence, his guardian angel(HenryTravers). To convince George not to go through with it, Clarenceshows him what life would be like without him.

Did youjust hear that bell ring? An angel just got his wings.

How To Give Personalized Gifts To Women And Children

Are you one of those people who becomes ecstatic when you receive any gift no matter what it is? All of us are like this! Why do we get so happy? It's because we know that the buyer has gone through great lengths to search for a suitable present they know will please us.

Gift certificates, pre-paid gift cards, and even cash are given more often as gifts these days. This is because our busy lifestyles, work and family schedules, and driving the kids all over town leave little time for in-store gift shopping. As a result, many of us to turn the Internet, but still feel that online shopping lacks that personal touch.

In reality, you don't have to that way. It might take a little more work, but shopping online enables you to not only find the perfect gift, but also get it personalized for your friend or loved one.

Here are ideas for personalized gifts for both children and women.

Personalized Gifts for Children

Kids love gifts! They have a way of bringing smiles and laughter from any child. Children will tear open any package, even if it is not for them. Although children rarely appreciate the gifts they receive, their parents do. Furthermore, gifts bearing the child's own name make treasured keepsakes.

Many online bookstores sell children's books that can be personalized. Gift book categories include books for babies, toddlers, and older children. Holiday books and special books can also be found. Simply choose a story that matches the interest of the child. On the order form, fill in the personalization information.

Most books can be personalized with the following information: age, boy or girl, date of occasion, first name, nickname, last name, home town, state, name of older child (brother, sister, friend, or sometimes a pet), names of other friends, a dedication, and whom the book is from.

Once the book order is received, the book printer replaces all the names and places in your chosen story with those of the child! The recipient becomes the star of the story. The action takes place in the child's town, with his or her friends as the co-stars. The book is then hardbound and shipped.

To find a store online, search for "personalized children's books."

Personalized Gifts for Women

Women love gifts as much as kids. This is especially true when lots of thought and consideration have been put into a gift. Men who are tired of buying the same chocolate, wine and flowers gifts should consider a personalized gift for their special woman. Imagine a completely personalized romance novel, with your sweetheart as the star! Much like the children's books described above, her personal information is inserted into a mainstream romance novel. However, the degree of personalization is much more detailed.

In addition to the basic information such as name, town, kids, pets, etc., you can include your name as the main male character (if you are the giver), her favorite music, perfume, physical characteristics, her car, where she works, and much more. Several sites also offer the romance stories in "mild" or "wild" flavors, depending on your (and her) tastes. If you thought roses made her grateful, wait until you make her the star of her very own romance novel.

To find a store online that offers this service, search for "personalized romance novels" or "personalized romance stories."

Most of us are just happy to get some attention not only on a special occasion, but also at any time! You can bring a smile to a friend or loved one's face all through the year when you surprise them with a personalized gift they will never forget. This will bring special memories that will last forever.

Design And Create Your Own Delightful Christmas Gift Baskets

Creating Christmas gift baskets can give one a great deal of pleasure as well as ignite the holiday spirit. It is a rewarding accomplishment to select personal gift items and favorite treats for that special person. With some planning you will come up with ideas for everyone on your holiday gift list.

There are many different kinds of containers to choose from. If your intention is to make a gift basket with Christmas decorative items and holiday food items, then a basket with red or green decorative touches would be lovely. A benefit to this kind of basket is that it can easily be reused throughout the holidays as a serving vessel year-after-year. Sled shaped containers are very attractive, easy to assemble, and reusable as well. If your plan is to make a gift basket based on a specific theme, choose a container that is appropriate for that theme. When in doubt, go with a natural color or white wicker basket.

One of my favorite Christmas gift baskets is a gift of candles, potpourri, and other fragrance items. Sachets, incense, candle holders, or other scented accessories for the home can also be included. Choose scents of the Christmas holiday such as pine, spice, balsam, or bayberry. Place red or green shred in your container before placing the gift items. Fill in any empty spaces with small unbreakable accessories, silk poinsettias, or silk greenery.

Designing a food gift basket with holiday foods is another easy-to-make gift basket. Simply fill your container with holiday treats and goodies that can be shared with family or friends during the holiday season. Homemade Christmas cookies, fudge, brownies, or other sweets presented in small cello gift bags or wrap are wonderful. Small cans of nuts or chocolates, hard candy, dried fruit, herbal tea, packages of gourmet coffee, and packets of cocoa mix are all readily available in supermarkets during the holiday season. Scatter some mixed nuts in the shell around the gift items and include several wrapped small candy canes for a decorative holiday look. If desired, include a CD of Christmas carols or a copy of "The Night Before Christmas" book for the children.

There are so many ways to turn all theme gift baskets into Christmas gift baskets. An easy way is to line the container with red or green in the form of shred, crumpled tissue paper, tea towels, or napkins. If you have a paper shredder, it's easy to make your own filler materials using Christmas

wrapping paper or any other paper you think would look nice in your gift basket. Another way to add that holiday touch is by scattering foil wrapped candies such as "Hershey's Kisses" amongst the gifts. Use ribbon, bows, raffia, or curly ribbon in holiday colors and tie small wrapped candy canes in with the ribbon. It looks very decorative to wrap some of the gifts in tissue paper and tie with red or green raffia before placing them in your Christmas gift basket. This is a good idea when you have gifts that don't look as pleasing as you would like. Small, unbreakable ornaments, jingle bells, silk holly or mistletoe placed in with the gift items look lovely also.

In order to stay within a budget, check out your local discount or dollar store early in the holiday season. I live within walking distance of two dollar stores; I shop there for baskets, shred, ribbon, bows, tea towels, candles, and lots of other items that come in handy when creating gift baskets. The secret is to shop early because the really nice things go fast. If you can make several Christmas gift baskets that are alike or have the same gift and food items, that could be a cost saving technique.

Christmas Party Celebrations - Fun And Festive!

Planning a Christmas party for your family and friends? Add a bit of spice to this year's event with festive party themes and game ideas! Whether you're hosting the family get-together, planning the office Christmas party or having the gang over for some Holiday cheer, you'll find the perfect party plan here!

Get Creative!
Deck the Halls with Christmas Balls! It's a make-your-own-ornament party. Set-up a table with styrofoam balls, fabric paint tubes, sequins, glitter and all the decorative trimmings. Each guest can make their own ornament to take home. Take secret ballot votes for the best homemade Christmas ball, winner get a prize!

Decorate your own Holiday cookies party. Have tubes of colored icing, a variety of sprinkles, cinnamon candies, gum-drops and coconut (for Santa's beard) setup on a table or work space. Bake a batch of sugar cookies and let the fun begin! Any cookies will do but Christmas themed cookie cutters make great cookies for decorating.

Trim the Tree Party. Necessary items -- tree decorations and one bare tree. This one is a blast that leaves you with an interesting tree and one less Christmas chore! Have all the ornaments, tinsel and tree trimmings visibly laid out and let your guest put them where they may (hopefully on the tree!).

Wrapping Races. Say that fast three times. Setup a wrapping table with gift wrap, ribbons, bows, tape and a few oddly shaped boxes or items. On your mark, get set, wrap! Your guest will race each other to see who can wrap their box first. How about prizes for the best and worst wrapping?

Yummy! This one's a twist on the cookie decorating theme. Instead of cookies your guest will build a gingerbread house! Make the gingerbread molds for one large house or a few smaller houses. Set out all the trimmings and icing and let the fun begin! This is great for gourmet-type friends and family gatherings.

Something for the Guys!
Teed Off Christmas Party. This one is great for all those golfers who are sidelined during the winter months. Setup various miniature golf "putting greens" for a rousing round of indoor golf. Use plastic balls and creative putting green "holes". Make it competitive -- every guests who makes a hole in one guests a prize!

Poker-night with a Christmas twist. It's regular poker night but this game is played for a good cause.. Your guest will play for their favorite charity. The winnings for the night will go to the chosen charity. This party theme is perfect for a large group or organization who want to make a charitable donation during the season. All the winnings can be pulled for one or more charities.

Scrooge's Feast. It's a past, present and future party! This one is great for couple groups. Each couple hosts a different stage of the dinner. The hors d'oeuvres are at one house, the entree's at another and the desert yet to come at the final destination. If you're smart about planning this you can invite three groups of friends and skip any meal preparations.

Family Fun!
All together now. It's a Christmas caroling party! You and your guest will traipse through the neighborhood singing their favorite carols. Best to get approval from your neighbors first. Maybe some of them will invite you in for a bit of Christmas punch. This is another great charitable activity for organizations. Caroling in nursing homes or hospitals will bring some grateful merriment to the receiver and giver alike,

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! It's a snow party! This one is for the kids and kids-at-heart. Know a perfect hill for sleigh riding in your neighborhood? Or maybe a great spot for building snowmen? Have your guests bring their own sleigh or have a few on hand. Setup sleigh races, a best snowmen contest and a best snow angel contest. Take pictures with your digital camera during the fun. Head inside for a warm cup of cocoa and share the pictures with your guests. There's sure to be much laughter at their snow antics.

Christmas Puzzle Party. How about a Christmas puzzle party. Do you have a group of friends that like to solve puzzles or mysteries? . Send each guest a piece or two of a puzzle. When they arrive the puzzle is partially put together. The guest take guesses as to what the end puzzle will be and have to find where their pieces fit. This is great for groups who may not know each other well. This theme is sure to get your guest interacting. Great for guest who may not know each other well.

Got Milk? It's a cookie exchange Christmas party! Each guest brings 6 dozen of their favorite holiday cookie along with 12 copies of the recipe. Other food is to be served since the cookies are not for eating but for exchanging. When the exchange starts, each guest introduces themselves and their cookie and tells any story about the recipe such as "My grandmother's, grandmother passed this recipe down...." or "I burned the first two batches, then switched recipes..."After the introductions each guest circles the table picking out 2 to 3 cookies from each batch. Everyone leaves with a container full of different cookies. This is great fun and a great way to find new cookie recipes.

There you have it! Twelve Holiday party themes for a fun and festive Christmas party! So put up the mistletoe, make the guest list and get the party started!

Christmas Traditions -- Wacky And Wonderful

Christmas traditions make the holiday season special. We all have certain rituals or customs we do every year to celebrate the season. Did you ever wonder how these customs got their start? Some traditions are well known to all some are celebrated by the few but all are a wonderful way to share the meaning of Christmas with those we love. Read on to learn more about how some traditions came to be.

Advent Calendar
Counting down the days until Christmas with an advent calendar is a popular holiday activity that started in 19th century German homes. The days were counted by making a chalk mark on the floor or hanging a different picture each day. This lead to homemade advent calendars with little doors that were opened each day revealing a Christmas image or bible verse.

Animal Crackers and Christmas?
The National Biscuit Company introduced "Barnum's Animal Crackers" as a holiday seasonal promotion in 1902. The boxes carrying string was designed for hanging on the Christmas tree at a time when candy and treats were typical tree decorations.

Bells
Bells and Christmas are inseparable. A simple silhouette of bells depicts a Christmas meaning. Bells became part of Christian worship around the year 400 and their sound summoning the faithful to worship was their first link to Christmas. This became the notion of "ringing-in" Christmas. In England Christmas is rung in starting December 21st. In Scandinavia, bells ring to announce the end of work and the beginning of the festive season. In some stories, St Nick carries around a hand bell on his visits. The gift-giver in Italy, Befana, rings a bell as she descends the chimney and in Hungary, angel bells are rung to announce that the children's presents have been delivered. Numerous carols use bells as a metaphor for joy and hope as in "Silver Bells," "I heard the Bells on Christmas Day," and "Jingle Bells."

Boxing Day
In Britain and many Commonwealth countries, December 26th is a legal holiday known as Boxing Day. Since the middle ages it was the custom during the Christmas season for English employees to solicit tips from people with whom their employer did business. These tips were collected in earthenware boxes which is where the day got its name.

Candy Canes
The red and white striped stick of hard candy known as the candy cane has its origins around 1670. The candy was invented as a means of quieting children during the Christmas service by a choirmaster of Cologne Cathedral. The candies were made in the shape of a shepherds hook. The shape of the hook soon led to hanging them on the tree as it was the custom to decorate the tree with sweets.

Christmas Carols
Carols were started as songs celebrating events of the Nativity. The word carol is said to be derived from a Greek word for circle dancing. Throughout the years religious organizations have both participated in and prohibited singing carols depending on the religious teachings of the day. During the 17th century carols were sung by carolers on "begging visits" during the Christmas season. After 1878, the Church of England renewed its use of Christmas carols which led to their popularity. The 20th century saw a continued interest in carols and a number of new religious and secular Christmas songs were written and became popular holiday favorites.

Childremas
December 28th is that date of the Feast of the Holy Innocents which commemorates the murder of the male babies of Bethlehem by King Herod. In many countries the day was considered a day of ill omen. In England no business was conducted on that day. In Ireland, no new venture was to begin on that day . Many sailors would not sail on December 28th. On the Aran Islands, no one was to be buried that day. In Cornwall washing that day would bring death to one of your relatives.

Christmas Crackers
A Christmas novelty made popular in Britain. The Christmas cracker is a small cardboard tube covered in decorative wrap. When pulled apart the tube makes a small explosive sound and the inside reveals toys and papers with humorous sayings. It was invented by a London confectioner who wanted a novelty that would sell for the Christmas season. Originally filled with sweet treats it was later filled with humorous or romantic sayings and prizes from inexpensive toys to expensive jewelry. It is now a popular part of Christmas celebrations in homes around the world.

Department Store Santas
The first department store to feature a visit with Santa was the J. W. Parkinson's store in Philadelphia in 1841. Astonishingly, no other department stores copied this event until 1890 when a store in Boston repeated it. Before long lines of children formed at stores across America to sit on Santa's lap and tell him their Christmas wish list. The department store Santa has been immortalized in films such as Miracle on 34th Street and Christmas Story.

Eggnog
This popular holiday drink takes its name from an old term for ale, "nog." It is copied from the French drink lait de poule, made of eggs, milk and spices. Americans added rum to it and topped it with nutmeg.

Elves
Small creatures who are associated with Christmas as Santa's helpers in the North Pole. They were not always so friendly. They originated in Scandinavia as house-elves who could be helpful if bribed but malicious if slighted, especially at Christmas. In Denmark, its customary to leave a bowl of milk out for them. Elves begin to take on a more positive and Christmas oriented persona in the 19th century as part of a drive to make Christmas more child-centered.

Christmas Games -- Is That You Santa?

We all now the jolly old guy who lives at the North Pole with a bunch of hard working elves--right? I mean Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without him! But just how did this jolly old character come to be? Why does he where a red suit and fly around with eight reindeer? How did he come to live in the North pole with all those elves?

Our beloved Santa Claus is a jolly old man indeed. His origins began centuries ago as a saint known as St. Nicholas in an area known today as Turkey. Saint Nicholas was a very old, much loved and generous saint. Legend has it that he gave bags of gold to three daughters of a destitute nobleman. Lacking any money or property for a dowry, the nobleman had intended to sell his daughters into prostitution or slavery. St Nicholas rescued them by throwing bags of gold through the window so each had a proper dowry.

Stories of St. Nicholas's good deeds multiplied. Over time, he became known as a protector and rescuer of children, parents, sailors and many others. By the time of the Renaissance, he had become the favorite saint of nearly everyone.

Though popular for centuries, St. Nicholas had no real history in Colonial America. However, during the Revolution, Dutch families, who had settled in New York City, began meeting annually on December 23 to celebrate the St. Nicholas on the anniversary of his death. St Nicholas celebrations and stories, as told by Dutch immigrants, helped to increased his recognition.

In 1809 Washington Irving's History of New York, introduced St. Nicholas to a National audience. The book introduced St. Nicholas as a "friend to children" however, the description of him had little resemblance to the Santa Claus we know today. In 1822, Clarence Clarke Moore, a literature teacher of Dutch ancestry, wrote a poem for his children titled "An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas." In his poem St. Nicholas acquired a new appearance and a bright new personality. We know this poem today as "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Moore was said to have modeled the new St. Nicholas after a "portly rubicund Dutchman" who lived near his father's home in New York.

Moore's poem was written as entertainment for his children only but the next year the poem was reprinted in a paper in New York with the title of "A Visit from St. Nicholas." It was said to have been submitted to the paper by a guest of the Moore family who visited during the Christmas season. Eventually, Moore published a collection of his poems, including "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1844. The poem was repeated sporadically throughout the Nation in various newspapers and publications during the Holiday season thus increasing the popularity of St. Nicholas.

Over time, Moore's poem was illustrated and various versions of St. Nicholas attire emerged. The early drawings of St. Nicholas had no real resemblance to the Santa Claus we know today. Early St. Nicholas was often drawn with toys in one hand and a "switch" in the other. Toys for the good children and a threat of the switch for bad children. This depiction is related to the German version of St Nicholas known as Belsnickel. This version of St Nicholas likely derived from the large numbers of German settlers in New York and Pennsylvania areas.

By the beginning of the Civil War, Belsnickel had faded and a likeness more closely resembling modern Santa Claus begin to take shape. In 1842 a book, published in Philadelphia, titled Kris Kringle's Christmas Tree, a holiday present for boys and girls included this updated illustration of Santa Claus. His actions were modeled after Moore's poem except he put gifts on the branches of the Christmas tree and not in stockings.

Today Santa Claus, with his red fur lined suit, sack full of toys and flying reindeer are as central to the American Christmas as gift-giving. His actions set into the motion the excitement of Christmas eve and Christmas morning. He is a folk hero who provides children joy and wonderment of the season though his often told stories.

As a successful factory owner, philanthropist, and quasi-religious figure, Santa represents the wistful yearnings of a newer nation who embraces its wealth while still searching for spiritual meaning. Yes, Santa "sells" and his character has helped merchants sell their Christmas goods for centuries. For many he represents all that is wrong with the holiday season. For others he embodies kindness and good-will that best characterizes the meaning of the season.

No matter where you fall in your opinion of St. Nichols, St. Nick, Kris Kringle, Santa Claus or whatever you call him. There's no denying that for American children there is no bigger delight than the wonder of his story and the joy of his character.

In Santa's Bag: Great Gifts For Mommy

As Christmas nears and little Johnny or Susie wants to get mommy a gift, the first reaction often is a simple one: "Let's go to the mall and get her a gift certificate so that she can buy herself whatever she wants."
Come on, dad. You can do better than that. Really, you can.

Women are complex subjects, no doubt. But what they really want for Christmas is a thoughtful gift. Sure, gift cards from the mall are nice. Get those, too. But this year do more than just that. Go a little above and beyond and actually put some brainpower into your purchasing. She'll be glad you did. And, as the saying goes, "When momma's happy everyone is happy!"

Here are five unique gifts for your consideration, all surefire ways to make mommy smile on Christmas morning:

A Penny for Your Thoughts - Your wife is looking for a thoughtful gift from the kids, not necessarily an expensive one. Start by helping the kids make an oversized Christmas card. Let them draw or finger paint images they associate with Christmas, such as Santa, Rudolph, presents under a Christmas Tree, etc. The kids will have fun, you'll enjoy the time with them and mommy will truly appreciate the card.

Time to Decompress - Being a mommy is stressful. It's a full time job with side gigs as nurse, teacher, disciplinarian, cook, maid, etc. Moms do it all. And it wears on them. Give mommy a break this year by getting her an appointment at a spa or salon. Let her get her nails done or get a body massage. It will relieve the holiday stress and she'll enjoy every minute of it.

Brand It - Any gift with a photo of the children is a good gift for mommy. Consider a personalized Christmas ornament complete with the children's pics and names. Or, for something even more unique and with year 'round display appeal, check out www.crystalix.com. This company can take your child's photo and laser-etch it into glass for a truly one-of-a-kind gift. This technology isn't cheap, of course.

Finally, treat mommy to breakfast. Chances are she's going to be doing her fair share of cooking throughout the day, whether she is preparing a Christmas feast herself or is simply going to help grandma cook. Once the gifts are unwrapped and the kids are playing with their new toys, take time to make mom a quick, simple breakfast such as pancakes or toast and eggs. She deserves the break. Besides, you'll be hungry, too!

The Savvy Shopper's Guide: Lowest Price Online Shopping For Hot Gift Items

If you're going to be a savvy online shopper, finding the lowest price for hot gift items is going to require a little work - but it's worth it. Here are some quick tips to improve your online shopping skills and to empower you to find those low prices you've been dreaming about!

Find Quality Products

Search for the brand names you trust before considering prices. The reason for doing this is you'll still want excellent quality even if the price is low. Searching for a low price only may result in getting a low-quality product. You're only wasting your time and money when buying items of poor quality. This is especially true with high-ticket gift items in electronics, games and toys, sporting goods, luggage and computers.

Shopping at Small Online Stores Versus Online Shopping Malls

Both small online stores and online shopping malls have their advantages and disadvantages. At small Web stores, you can usually enjoy a more personal shopping experience and find specialty items that you might not find anywhere else, online or off. However, these types of stores are usually limited in what they offer, and they might only focus on one particular type of product. These tend to be higher-priced on gift items as well.

At online shopping malls, the experience is more similar to that of shopping at large department store. You have a variety of categories to choose from, and can usually get items at a low price. These "low price" online shopping malls are great when you need to buy several gift items at once. They usually offer a wide selection of housewares, electronics, giftware, games and toys, headsets & phones, fragrances, candles, lingerie items, and much more.

A disadvantage of using a mall is you may not always find the brand name you're looking for, but a similar one is usually available. Also, you should check to be sure the items will be shipped quickly enough to give the gift to your loved one. Some online malls use international distributors or manufacturers to ship items, so be informed before you buy.

*Extra Tip: No matter where you shop, look for sales and bargains over the holidays to get the lowest prices while shopping online!

Use the Power of the Search

Finding the lowest price is easier than ever once you learn to use the "power of the search!" The Internet is built on searches, but millions of people still do not understand "how" to search for what they want. You can start with major search engines, and type in specific items or brand names you want to buy. Be very specific at the start. Then, if you are unable to find the specific item, do general searches.

For example, you might type in the search phrase "15-inch Magnavox PC Monitor" for starters, but then a more general term such as "magnavox monitors" if you are unable to find it on your first search. If you find an online shopping mall that you feel comfortable with, you can do searches within the mall to save time. Then, you can compare brand names and prices right there to find the best gift items available at the lowest prices.

Use this guide to become a savvy online shopper, and find all the hot gift items you need at the lowest prices possible!

How To Find The Perfect Gifts For Everyone On Your List

How To Find The Perfect Gifts For Everyone On Your List
By Chris Robertson
With the holidays just around the corner, many people are wracking their brains, trying to think of the perfect gifts for every person on their list. It can be hard to find gifts that convey the right emotional tone and that the recipient will enjoy. Here, then, are tips to find the perfect gifts for everyone on your list.

Friend, Family or Colleague?

First, write down the name of every person for whom you'd like to (or are obligated to) buy a gift. Next, give each person a rating on a scale of one to five, depending on how close they are to your intimate inner circle. If it helps, draw a series of five concentric circles, with the center circle representing those who know your dreams and aspirations and experience your joys and tribulations as they happen. The outer circle represents those people who may not know the "real" you, such as your boss or a business associate. There may be people on your list, such as your child's teacher, who isn't close to you, but who has made a tremendous difference in your child's life. Even though she may not know you well, you might decide to put her name in the second circle.

The reason for this exercise is to keep things in perspective when choosing gifts. It's all too easy to get swept up in the excitement of shopping, and select an inappropriately intimate gift for someone to whom you're not that close. Rating each person can seem calculating, but it will prevent you from buying lingerie for your pastor's wife!

Practical vs. Whimsical

The next step is deciding which people on your list would enjoy practical gifts, which would appreciate whimsical gifts, and which could go either way. So, put a "P" (for "practical"), a "W" (for "whimsical"), or a "PW" (for "practical or whimsical") next to each name. Women who are practical might enjoy a handbag or a blender, while those who are whimsical would appreciate jewelry and painted glass. Those who straddle the fence might find leather goods appealing, since they're both practical and luxurious.

The man who's whimsical might enjoy any number of personal electronics, such as a gaming system or DVD player. A practical man who's into cars, on the other hand, would appreciate a car alarm or even automotive parts. A man with a foot planted in both camps might enjoy something like a radar detector, a headset, or a telephone.

The Zen of Shopping

When you have many people on your gift list, it's important to keep yourself from getting caught up in shopping mania - going to the mall and grabbing whatever's available. Now that you have a list that has helped you define your relationships and determined the kinds of gifts each person might enjoy, why not take your time and shop online? Online mega malls have tens of thousands of items that would make perfect gifts. Best of all, they're often available at wholesale prices and the online stores can dropship them in a matter of a few days. No hassles, no worries, and your holiday shopping is complete!
