A Mother's Day Gift For My Father

By Laura Weaver

My father can certainly be described as "one of a kind". He has been my life's biggest influence. He has provided for me, both financially and emotionally. He has supported me through all of my growing pains. He let me make my own mistakes, but he's always been there to help me see how to correct them.

I guess all dads play those sorts of roles, but my dad has done it more than most. You see, he has played the role of being both mother and father to me from my first day on this earth. My mother didn't make it through childbirth, you see. My incredible father was able to look past his grief and personal tragic loss to accept this position. It is because of his unconditional love for me that I want to recognize my father on Mother's Day.

I considered giving my father a gift of a golf package where he would be able to choose to play at the local public golf course at a lower rate. He enjoys golfing and this gift would give him the chance to be out in the fresh air and get some healthy exercise. It would also let him socialize with others; something he doesn't often get to do.

Or, I could easily give him a simple photograph of the two of us together, in a very casual pose. It could be one from our fall fishing excursion...him, proudly grinning from ear to ear...me, holding up my trophy-size salmon. I could place it in a hand-made frame with various fishing lures glued around the border. I can see him displaying this on his desk or on his bureau, thinking about the great time we had together each time he looks at it.

It wasn't an easy decision, but I ultimately decided to give him what he truly enjoys. My dad has an insatiable sweet tooth, so I decided on a gourmet cheesecake. He loves a fine dessert, and I know he'll cherish every bite. Besides, I can give him one of those other ideas for Father's Day!
