Wind Chimes for You - Wind Chimes for Gifts

By Beth Hoy

A wind chime is a musical instrument played by the wind. You'll find wind chimes available in many different compositions: aluminum, bamboo, brass, bronze, clay, copper, glass, porcelain, steel, wood - and the list doesn't stop there. All have their own unique sounds that you can listen to online if your computer is sound enabled.

Noise that irritates you in your living space will be negated by hanging a wind chime in a breezy location. Your ear will tune to hear the sporadic tones, not the car speeding by or the racket of the neighbor's lawn equipment. As the years pass you'll hear the wind chime and have the feeling you have for an old friend. You may even find yourself predicting weather as fronts move in and your wind chime signals change of wind direction or oncoming rain.

These musical sculptures can also enhance the appearance of your outdoor living area as garden ornamentations and become part of your d้cor. Did I say outdoor? A wind chime can also be used indoors! Hang by a window you often open, or decorate a dark corner with an attractive hanging decoration.

The most popular tuning for a wind chime is the pentatonic scale, five notes that have no dissonance when sounded together. Other chords can be found:

  • the uplifting major chord

  • the more subtle minor chord

  • a host of chords using 9ths and 11ths & 13ths

  • tonalities steeped in music theory

Good wind chime tunings are notated for the notes they use. Listen and think of what you'd like to hear in the background of your days and nights.

The quality of the product is all-important, I believe - strung well, using top quality materials, and guaranteed. Emphasis on sound is apparent in the sound bytes serious wind chime vendors offer. Metal composition wind chimes will survive a fall in high, gusty stormy winds but glass, clay or porcelain will likely break if they land on cement. When picking out a wind chime keep these things in mind so you get one that gives you the greatest pleasure for the longest time.

Half the wind chime sales are for gifts. I know I often remember how my mother gave me my first wind bells. I've been told I was remembered too, whenever I made a gift of one to a friend. When you give the gift of spontaneous music with nature you give a "living" gift, it comes to life when the air moves and there is no way to anticipate what configuration of tones you're going to hear next.

Wind Chimes can be deeply personal gifts, as well as a gift given at "arms length". Some of the cards I have typed have moved me to tears, the emotion was so rich. They've also been given as "well-wishing" gifts, and one can tell by the card that there isn't a lot of emotional attachment. Grace Notes, a popular wind chime maker, can engrave their breezecatchers with your own personal message. You will be remembered, whether you're a far-away friend wishing wedded bliss or saying "hi" from the old neighborhood.
