The Best Source for Teen Gift Ideas

By Levon Perkins

Anyone who grew up watching "Mr. Ed" on television is likely to be quite familiar with this line from the program's theme song: "Go straight to the source and ask the horse..." This same general principle can be applied to determining the wants of a particular teen. Searching for teen gift ideas doesn't need to be complicated. Often it's better, and safer, to simply ask them what it is they want! Set aside a place to keep a file (or comparable system) where a list of gift items can be stored. The list can be written or a combination of notes and pictures cut from various ads. Using this method you will end up with ideas from several price ranges, and categories to choose from.

If it turns out they want a particular gift which costs more than you intended to spend be prepared to respond in a positive way. Depending on your relationship with the teen you might be able to come up with a job or list of chores that can be performed in order to make up the difference. Agreeing to combine gifts like birthday and Christmas is an additional option. Preferably, however, the dates for these events should only be days, or at most, a couple of weeks apart! A third option would be to partner with someone else to purchase the gift for a teen.

Accessories make great gifts when you can't buy "that thing" they want because it's too expensive. Determine if they don't already have something similar which can be upgraded. They may not be completely satisfied with this suggestion but it's better that nothing, and teaches sometimes compromise is necessary!

When you want to make the gift a surprise but still get the teen exactly what they want you'll have to start planning well in advance. The key here is to keep your eyes and ears open; and have your radar set to see what gets them excited. Listen to what dominates the conversation when friends are around. Pay attention to where the teen hangs out when you have an opportunity to shop together. Find out what they do when they go to visit friends; quite often teens migrate to a particular spot because a friend has "that thing" and they don't.

Be creative, have fun and you won't go wrong finding the perfect teen gift!
